What does it mean when you come across strange tunnels with tracks in them on minecraft

These are abandoned mineshafts. Inside them you will find chests with valuables in them, cobwebs (which are a pain because when you get caught in one you move very slowly eventually you'll become unstuck. You can only get rid of cobwebs with a sword) and some bad guys.
