How do you get the dragonballs in Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3

the dragonballs are awarded to you after a battle. but at some points during the story mode, during battles, when the map is destroyed dragonballs appear, and you automatically pick it up, unlike the previous game where you had to fly around grabing the dragonballs. when you pick up a db a dragonball symbol appears under the timer.
